Retailer bashes Eidos for dropping prices

It looks like another fragile relationship is being strained, and this time, it’s between the UK-based software publisher Eidos, and the UK indie video game retail chain, Chips.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Chips’ managing director Don McCabe, points out that retailers are currently having second thoughts about purchasing stock from Eidos because of its bad habit of dropping prices too fast. According to him, they have been disappointed with a few Eidos titles such as Tomb Raider: Legends, as the publisher has “dropped its pants way too quickly and reduced its price”, when it could have sold for more. He goes on to say that,

You get that with certain publishers that are undisciplined. It’s a strange company to deal with and makes us wary of buying stock because you expect the recommended retail price to evaporate right away.

He then goes on to compare Eidos with the likes of Nintendo, who “maintains its RRP as long as possible and is a really well-disciplined publisher”, thus allowing retailers to get more profit out of the product since the software has not yet devaluated.

Eidos is known for publishing titles such as the Tomb Raider series, Fear Effect, Hitman, and Legacy of Kain.
