Review: The Godfather
The groundbreaking movie hit of 1972 The Godfather immersed people in the dangerous and perilous world of the Mafia. The fascination continues to absorb not only movie buffs but gamers who wish to have a feel of the underworld and get acquainted with the family of the dreaded Don Vito Corleone.
When Paramount Pictures sold the EA the right to The Godfather, EA made a successful attempt to capture the mood, ambience and impression of The Godfather, discounting fears that EA might ruin the original appeal of the movie. And if you are acquainted with the movie, you will observe some familiar scenes and though you cannot play them all, you can play young Michael Corleone’s part and gain perspective how a common thug rose from the rank and became the top honchos of the family business. Using the same movie story line, the game keeps a sense of direction, not taking you randomly anywhere. And if you have not seen the movie before, the story mission will help the fun rolling as it helps you direct to the story.
Interesting features include an open world environment where you can stroll in the gangster- infested street of New York anytime you want to, doning a Mafia look created in your own image. Just make sure you look tough enough to brave the street. Manner of dispatching your enemies? If guns bore you so much, you can throw those powerful punches or combination of the two. Using the combat system called Hand of Death, kicks, punches and elbows becomes your messenger of death. You can drag them, throw them around, hold them while punching the other hand, make them kneel and beg for mercy and othe fatal variety. Depends how brutal you can possibly get. Bribery is not uncommon to the Mafia so make sure you got lots of quid in your pocket.
Though the fights scenes are beautifuly created, you have the tendency to become almost invincible and can easily dispatch your enemies just using punches. I guess the enemies were programmed to take pleasure in getting beaten, you know, as a joke.
