Rumor: New PSP to sport a slimmer look, but nothing else

They did it with the PS2, and another company was able to do it with their handheld (read: the Nintendo DS lite). With the PSP not being THAT portable, it’s not a surprise people are clamoring for a “slim” or “lite” version of Sony‘s contender in the handheld market. And with rumors of an official “upgrade” circulating, it’s also not hard to speculate on what the new and improved Playstation Portable would look like.

Enter Games Radar and their take on the Playstation Portable “Lite”. While it’d certainly be nice for Sony to improve on the PSP’s features (i.e. better screens, better button layout, a new analog stick, built-in flash memory) they say that the actual update would only focus on giving the rather bulky handheld a sleeker, slimmer casing. This prediction stems from the Slim PlayStation 2 – it didn’t actually offer anything else other than the fact that it was smaller than the original by a considerable amount.

While this seems realistic, we can’t help but point to Nintendo’s take on the “Lite” treatment. Not only did the Nintendo DS Lite get some serious trimming, it was also blessed with bigger screens, a new brightness setting, and a revised button layout. It’s also worth mentioning that the DS Lite, when closed and not in use, can easily fit into pockets (usually not recommended as a way of storage, but the point remains), staying true to it being “portable”.

Different company policies aside, Sony’d be crazy not to take this opportunity to listen to what the fans want, and realize them onto its handheld – just like what Nintendo did. The slimmer casing would just be icing on the cake. And besides, if you’re going to be re-inventing the PSP itself, why not go with the improvements?

Then again, that’s just me. Now it’s your turn, readers, to say what you think about the whole PSP Slim/2/Lite deal. Let us know by your comments!
