Square Enix - Image 1It’s been a while since we’ve heard of any industry-related job cuts, and for some time back there, it looked like everything was getting back on the right track. With one successful gaming event and conference after the other, and with sales numbers inching and itching to get better, it did look like we’re getting out of this slump alive – slowly, but definitely surely. Then we get this.

Square Enix Japan is being rumored to be getting ready to bring down the axe on some 200 to 300 jobs in their company. The Japanese gaming industry has only recently been diagnosed by Keiji Inafune as being over, thanks to the underwhelming booth attendance at the recent TGS. Compared to the previous years, this one’s relatively just okay.

Now, we have no confirmation yet regarding this bit of rumor, but if this be true, some like Kotaku posits that it could be merely a corporate reorganization, what with Eidos Interactive being acquired by Square Enix Europe, and Taito (which is also under the Square umbrella) being in some sort of trouble.

But if it really means that the company is in some unpleasant boiling tub of finance woes, then it’s just quite hard to imagine, wouldn’t you think? After all, they’re the company who brought us worldwide delights like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
