Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have announced that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct a live-action movie based on Blizzrd’s Warcraft universe. It’s Warcraft, so this isn’t just limited to that insanely popular MMO we’ve all encountered at one point or another.

So far this is the first official bit of detail I’ve heard, but some early reports have pegged the movie to be sporting a budget of more than US$ 100 million. It’s also supposed to take place a year before the events in World of Warcraft.

“From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice,” said Paul Sams, Blizzard’s chief operating officer. “Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We’re looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”

Raimi is perhaps best known these days for the Spider-Man trilogy, but I’ll always remember him as the man who masterfully worked a tree rape scene into a zombie movie starring a guy who eventually cut off his hand and attached a chainsaw to the bloody stump. Guy’s a genius.
