Second Life’s top ten user-created items

Second LifeLet’s all imagine a game with no levels, no score, no set challenges, no end. If you played such a game, what would you be doing? What would all the players be doing? Well, in Second Life, a game that fits the criteria we set forth beforehand, people are creating, buying, and selling stuff.

The amount of user-created content being bought and sold in the virtual world of Second Life is estimated to reach 15 terrabytes’ worth. That’s equivalent to the output of 5,100 full-time programmers. All that content isn’t going cheaply, too. Second Life residents are reportedly spending US$ 7 million a month on digital goods and services. Of course, we’re thinking that that amount is in Linden dollars (current exchange rate is approximately L$ 274 to US$ 1). Otherwise, seven million dollars is just sheer insanity.

Regardless, just what are these people making anyway? Some of the most popular items in Second Life are pretty useful like the Translator HUD, an item that automatically translates in-world text chat in 10 languages, including French, German, Japanese, and Arabic. Others even touch on the near-mundane. You can say that Siggy Romulus’ Swimmer is one of these things, but mundane as it may seem, the bits of realism it has added to the game has been a hit with players.
