Secret Level game director on adapting the Iron Man script to the game

Tony Stark forging his armor in the Iron Man movie - Image 1One of the most challenging tasks of a game director is that of crafting a story for a game based on an existing story or script. Jeffrey Tseng of Secret Level tells us a little bit about his experience with the Iron Man video game. He also tells how he and his team attempted to craft the game’s story based on the movie script and the comic book. More Iron Man narrative creation follows after the jump.

Iron Man as seen in Marvel Comics - Image 1Jeffrey Tseng is Secret Level’s game director for the upcoming Iron Man (PC, PSP, DS, Wii) video game for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It’s his job to craft the story for the game adaptation of the Marvel super hero. As he will tell you, it’s no easy task.

According to Tseng, the challenges of making Iron Man came from at least two fronts. The first was the need to be consistent with what was shown in the Iron Man movie. The second was the need to satisfy die-hard Iron Man comic book fans.

Fortunately, Tseng said that he managed to reconcile the two. The result is a story that contains new and original content, yet still overlaps the movie and the comic book at certain points.

Tseng also mentioned that the Secret Level team had hit a few snags when working with the scripts. The mission dialogue scripts were particularly problematic.  They were unable to complete the said scripts because the missions needed to be finished first. Furthermore, they needed the completed dialogue scripts for the game’s voice recordings.  Fortunately, Tseng and co. somehow managed get everything done.

It was Tseng’s intention to come up with environments and missions in the game that would be fun to play. We’ll be getting a better look at the fruit of his and Secret Level’s hard work once the Iron Man game is released.
