Sega Genesis Collection Presents Ecco the Dolphin: The Video
The Sega Genesis Collection is a compilation of 22 Genesis games from 15 years ago. Today we focus on one of those games: Ecco the Dolphin.
Originally developed for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco: The Tides of Time, and Ecco Jr.) and Sega Dreamcast (Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future), Ecco the Dolphin is a complex game set under the sea back when Bikini Bottom was still a one-seahorse town. It features a society of braniac dolphins including Ecco, a young bottlenose dolphin. As the main character, Ecco possesses powers such as shape-changing and using his sonar as a weapon.
The Ecco gameplay is mostly side-scrolling, with horizontal, diagonal, and vertical movement. High speed ramming is one of Ecco’s method of attacking enemies. Players could also make Ecco perform out-of-water acrobatics and determine his cruising speed. Other aspects of the game include interacting with other dolphins and other marine life by “singing” (which mimics real dolphins’ echolocation ability).
Ecco must surface for air or he drowns once his air meter is exhausted. His health can be restored by eating fish, “singing” to clams or Glyphs (healing cyrstals). The original Ecco features challenging underwater maze where Ecco can easily drown and aerial jumps over obstacle.
Ecco the Dolphin will make its splashy debut on the PSP via the SEGA Genesis Collection this Fall.
