Sega: Wii lets game designers get more creative than in PS3 and Xbox 360

Mario and Sonic - Image 1Referring to Nintendo Wii’s low development costs, Sega‘s North American president Simon Jeffrey said that third-party games for the Wii will be more creative and unique, compared to its Sony and Microsoft rivals.

On the other hand, he explains that third-party titles for both PS3 and the Xbox 360 tend to be more standardized due to ‘rationalized’ development costs, hindering third-party developers from exploring the console’s limits or even experiment with new kinds of gaming.

Jeffrey made an example out of Electronic Arts: “Just look at what EA is already doing on the Wii – EA doesnÂ’t usually do that kind of game.” Maybe he’s also alluding to Madden NFL 08 Wii’s Telestrator, perhaps?

Jeffrey also said that he’s seeing the same game standardization in PSN and XBLA. “The industry will be looking to Sony and Microsoft to bring as much new IP as possible.”

With Sega being the winner of the “Best Wii Game title” in the Leipzig Game Convention for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, one could say that it certainly knows what it’s talking about, and it never hurts to heed what someone has has to say about one’s work.
