With the Christmas season coming in, a new battlefield for the console wars is about to be crossed. Noah Musler, Sega‘s director of artists and repertoire, talks about the direction Sega is taking with its new releases and his take on the current state of the console wars.
He relates how the next generation consoles still have a long way to go before any clear winner can be decided. As it is, he said that it would be “publisher heaven” if every platform had the installed base of the PS2 console. While Nintendo’s Wii already has 15 million units installed in North America, he believes that there’s still a lot of potential for the console.
Musler also mentioned the biggest thing going for the PS3 right now is the price cut that it recently received. He says that there’s a big possibility of it catching up to the 360 and even surpassing it. Here’s what he had to say about it:
I think it has still got a little bit of time to grow. But all of our projections. I think that most analysts would agree that PS3 is going to catch up to the 360, if not surpass it, as more and more big titles come out.
There is still a lot of room for the market to grow, however. With game developers continuing to improve the industry, people will always want to buy more games. He explained that this is what drives the development community into making a great product.
He ended the interview by saying that Sega still hasn’t given up on the PS2 as a console they want to publish games on. While they will be a bit more selective on what titles to put out for the PS2, he believes that the console could be vital all the way through 2009.
