Small Arms for Xbox 360 Live – An Interview with Developer Don Wurster
K1lla’s interview with Don Wurster, Co-Director/Developer for Gastronaut Studios, has unearthed tons of info about the battle frenzied game Small Arms for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade. Before you get too excited, be aware that the game is currently in development so the screenshots are not from the final build. Check out the gameplay video.
In Small Arms, up to four players can duke it out using a set of interchangeable “gun arms”. Each player starts with an initial weapon and can grab new ones as the game progresses. The game can be described as a hybrid fighting/platforming/shooting game. It will contain a number of interactive elements that makes the game even more fun.
With 10-12 characters in the game, some people who have viewed the gameplay video were reminded of Nintendo‘s Super Smash Bros. series. Wurster dismissed the “Super Smash Bros. Clone” tag and explains that Small Arms‘ combat focuses on ranged attacks, making it more of a tactical game. Despite the cartoonish characters, the weapons and environments give the game a gritty feel than most Nintendo titles, quite fitting for an Xbox 360 Live Arcade game.
If the 12 character casting isn’t enough, then you’d be happy to know that there are plans to release additional characters on Marketplace. Some of them will be unlockable as you play the game.
Without giving too much away, Wurster talks about the different weapons of the initial characters.
‘Marky Kat’ is our cyborg cat character who sports a ‘chain gun’ as his default weapon. The primary attack is a rapid fire stream of bullets, while the secondary is a shotgun type burst shot. Another character ‘Mr Truffles’ is an assassin truffle pig who uses a sniper rifle as his default weapon. The primary attack is a deadly accurate sniper rifle with a laser sight. As a secondary attack, the sniper rifle provides ‘proximity mines’ which you can leave behind around the level for unsuspecting opponents. There are also a number of less traditional weapons, such as one that shoots multiple boomerang like saw blades, and a mysterious psychic glove.
The release date of the game is yet to be determined but Wurster estimates an end of summer launch.
