SNES Tilt Controller Recovered
GoNintendo recently got their hands on a scan of an early EGM issue that covered a new controller for the SNES developed by a third party company. This controller was appeared in the January 1994 edition of EGM and featured a “New tilt joypad for the Super NES..” This controller was one of the first tilt controllers introduced and placed on the market, much earlier than the PS1’s tilt controller. However, the controller was really only ideal for racing games, much like the PS3’s controller and it’s tilt technology. As demonstrated at E3, the tilt sensor in the controller is ideal for flight games and racing, but apart from that it’s not that great.
Now, I’m not going to say that Sony copied this design, I’ll just say that the design of such a controller has been out longer than we imagined! This “J3-306 Power Pad Tilt” was very revolutionary, but unfortunately it was a killer controller. Naoneo (Fluff) recalled that the controller died in its early stages due to mercury tilt switches. Now, as many of you know, mercury does not only make a fun liquid to play and watch, it is also a very dangerous substance. So, while the controller was revolutionary with tilt-sensors, its contents were no more than deadly.
