We’re not exactly sure where the Japanese get their wacky ideas, but we do know for certain that they’ve got the best video game commercials we’ve ever seen. For those who are not familiar with what they watch on TV over there at the land of the rising sun, here are some ads that we utterly love and come back to for a good laugh. You’ll find videos dating back to the early 90s and also some relatively recent ones. Let’s not go into boring details, so sit back and enjoy!
The Legend of Zelda
Kudos goes to Skullkid700 who took the trouble just to compile these great Legend of Zelda TV spots. Some of the ads were produced for the west, but the Japanese bits also come in good doses. Even if these gems evolved from classics that can only be found in the archives of hilarious commercials to more modern ads that promoted recent Zelda games like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, the humor stood the test of time and never failed to amuse us.
Segata Sanshiro
He was a man of legend, a man of justice – the solitary man who devoted his soul to the way of games, who will punish those who do not play seriously. For him, love is empty unless it’s love for gaming. Those who do not immerse themselves to the extreme in gaming, he will tear them apart! He was the brainchild of Sega executives trying to market the Sega Saturn in Japan, and the description we gave is the rough translation of his theme song. Ultimately, he’s the vessel of many lulz-worthy moments we may never forget.
Final Fantasy XII Potion
You thought some parts of the world are just crazy for RPGs? In Japan, they DO fight over potions that spawned from that popular series you should know about – Final Fantasy. According to what we’ve heard, the potions taste bad and Master Chief’s Game Fuel is leagues better. Then again, if it was so undesirable, would two people fight for it inside a convenience store where they can damage goods and be obligated to pay?
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
You’ll see one Caucasian guy and a chick who doesn’t look remotely Asian, but without a doubt, this Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition trailer is authentically made in Japan (as if the Japanese subtitles don’t make it obvious). When things go wrong and your girl gets kidnapped by farmers infected with Las Plagas, there’s only one way to save her.
God Hand
The last title Clover Studio developed before disbanding may have gone past your noses, but a backgrounder isn’t necessary to get the kicks out of this God Hand trailer. Some half-naked guy with a fist for a head walks around spanking ladies and breaking cars. Need we say more?
