Something New for Daedalus: Viewport Scaling

If you just saw the title of this article, some of you might be groaning by now. Because the last time we posted a Daedalus update, commenters like Loveless (#12) aired that they didn’t need an “hour by hour account” of PSP emulator updates. But as what duhh (#24) points out, “Pspupdates has a right if not obligation to post anything news related about the psp no matter how significant. that simple. its a simple glance over if you dont like it folks”. Yes, yes, everyone has their valid point. We hear you. But since Daedalus, an N64 emulator.”>N64 emulator for PSP”>Daedalus, an N64 emulator.”>Strmnnrmn‘s Daedalus has made improvements on his emu, we can’t pass up on this update.

And so, with that said and done, here’s what the developer accomplished these past days on his emu: StrmnNrmn just posted that he has fixed the viewport scaling for his Daedalus homebrew, one of the more talked-about N64 emus for the PSP. He’s now managed to include three different modes in which you can play your N64 games.

16:9 - Image 14:3 (320x240)4:3 (362x272)

From left to right (click images to enlarge):

The first mode (which is what the current Daedalus runs on) stretches the video output to fit the PSP’s 16:9 screen. Notice that the vertical bars of the letters ‘f’ and ‘t’ in the text are heavy. The carpet also poses another graphics-problem that StrmnNrmn is planning to address. The second mode shows the un-stretched 4:3 screen ratio (renders at 320×240), which solves the ‘f’ and ‘t’ problem (but not really the carpet). Of course, with this screen mode, there’s the waste of space on the sides. The third mode is the new 4:3, but this time renders 362×272 pixels to make the most out of the height of the screen.

Thanks to cools for the tip-off.
