Sony AU’s Adrian Christie on PS3 software sales and launch numbers
You’ve already heard about the 20,000 plus PlayStation 3 (PS3) units sold in Australia, almost one week after launch. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia PR Manager Adrian Christie affirmed this report by stating, “I’d say 5000, that night, went home with a console. That’s an assumption, but over the weekend, there was 20,000 sold through.”
Aside from the hardware sales figures, Christie also provided a glimpse of the software sales for the past week. According to him, eight of the week’s top 10 full-priced video games for all formats were PS3 titles, with Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm leading the pack.
Despite these numbers, Christie shared that their company is refraining from making direct comparisons because that is very problematic. He shared that there are a lot of ways to twist numbers,
I could say that’s on revenue and you could say that, “Well, that’s just profit.” And you could turn around and say, “Well, other competitors did more units at launch,” and we could say, “That’s four days, not three days.” We prefer people not judge the longevity of the console on the launch period.
The Sony official then mentioned that they have upcoming plans to ensure the continued momentum of the PS3 towards 2008 and beyond. Adrian Christie didn’t go to specifics but he did mention that the PlayStation Store will be updated regularly with content dedicated to Australia.
According to Christie, launch numbers are not at all important in the long run, “Well, I don’t think it is at all. You only need to go back and look at the PS2 and PSone sales data. Do you need the thousands upon thousands – or millions – in the first week to be successful? I don’t think that’s the case.”
