Sony Australia’s thoughts on Nintendo
Wouldn’t you like to know what other people think about you? Well, sadly we can’t do that for you but we can give you the next best thing: Sony Australia‘s thoughts on Nintendo and in particular, the Wii. This is because Michael Ephraim, the well-known Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, recently spoke with the popular Australian newspaper – The Age – on what he thinks the Nintendo Wii will effect the launch of the PS3 at the retailers this Christmas.
If you are expecting the Sony Australia MD to slate Nintendo, look away now. “Nintendo is a great company as far as games development goes, they have been around for a long time, they know how to deliver an entertaining product. My only question for this Christmas on Wii is the price point. Even though it’s affordable, at $ 400 plus whatever you need to buy accessories-wise, we’re guessing you need to spend about $ 500 AUS to take home a Wii and enjoy it,” Ephraim said when asked about Nintendo’s goal of attracting the mass market.
When asked about the Wii in particular Emphraim appeared to show interest in the unique console. “I’ve heard good things about it. For this Christmas, I think that price point is still not family entertainment because $500 AUS is a lot to fork out, but we welcome the Nintendo heritage of gaming where they can appeal to a broader audience because long-term that is critical for the industry.”
We still find it quite funny that a Sony MD comments on the price of the Wii considering the high price of Sony’s PS3 console, but on the whole Ephraim praised the actions of Nintendo in developing the Wii and wished them success in making it. The Wii may be the smallest of the three next generation consoles, but it’s still a big contender as far as sales are concerned.
