Sony: We Announced Home Too Early - Image 1Timing is everything, and this is specially true when it comes to publicity.

PlayStation Home is the perfect example. If Sony hadn’t announced it as early as it did, they wouldn’t have set up gamers for disappointment over its many delays.

Sony recently admitted as much. Says game director Peter Edward:

Initially, there was real excitement from people, because we were showing something really different and that had a lot of potential.

And then there’s the realisation that, well, we probably announced it too early – GDC 07 was a long time ago. I think there was sort of recognition amongst developers of ‘Oh, this is interesting, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

But don’t go running away from Home now. Sony says we’ll be seeing some Home improvements soon. (Pun combo! Points for me!) Edward says that while there’s been initial hesitation from developers, who didn’t really get what Home was all about, they’re now starting to see the potential of Home.

The feedback weÂ’ve been getting is that, in the early days, it was a bit thin on the ground in terms of support and tools, but now itÂ’s mature and everybodyÂ’s starting to produce some really interesting stuff.

As soon as developers start seeing what other people have done, it really starts to build on the excitement, and now itÂ’s at a really nice stage where people realise that itÂ’s not that difficult, and also that the possibilities are pretty vast. So weÂ’re back at the exciting stage again.
