Sony India: Ken Nakazawa comments on the PlayStation 3 launch
With the Sony PlayStation 3’s launch and (suprisingly somber) ad campaign well under way in India, a recent interview with Divisional Head Ken Nakazawa of Sony India reveals more details with regards to the company’s plans.
First up was an explanation of the reason behind the long delay behind the release of the PS3 in India, a PAL territory. As Nakazawa-san explained, the PS3’s release schedule was due to Sony’s use of Blu-Ray zoning codes which separated the PS3’s launch into three regions: A, B, and C. India reportedly falls under region C, alongside Russia and China.
With regards to the PS3’s launch, Nakazawa-san further explained that a dozen games were already available for purchase alongside the console:
- Resistance: Fall of Man
- MotorStorm
- Genji: Days of the Blade
- Formula One Championship Edition
- Ridge Racer 7
- Def Jam: Icon
- Fight Night Round 3
- NBA Street 4 Homecourt 2007
- Need for Speed Carbon
- The Godfather: The DonÂ’s Edition
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007
Nakazawa further reiterated on the PS3’s accessory pack – the EyeToy Camera, and SingStar Microphone came up – as well as the console’s PlayStation Network. When quizzed regarding how he thinks the PS3 would fare in the country given its notoriously high price, Nakazawa further commented:
The small and nascent console gaming market in India is gaining a big boost with the entry of new brands, in-turn removing barriers for consumers who would have previously not considered games as an entertainment option. We are happy that there are more brands to help us grow and develop the market.
India’s PS3s are currently priced at INR 39, 990 (US$ 975.93) per unit.
