Sony not competing with Microsoft and Nintendo? Hmm…
We’ll try to say as politely as we can that Yuichi Ejiri is a master of doublespeak. Really, he is. Here’s why. After we, the consumers, endure an intensive hype campaign from the Sony marketing people, after we get bombarded with bold statements like “next-gen starts when we say so,” we read a Dow Jones report that has Ejiri say this:
Yuichi Ejiri, general manager of sales and marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong, conceded that competition in the game console market is intensifying with rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. offering cheaper devices. But he added that the PS3’s Blu-Ray player and high-definition graphic capabilities will differentiate the device from other consoles in the market.
So the PS3 isn’t competing against the Xbox 360. Okay, we read you Ejiri. I mean, yeah, you’re saying that the PS3 is a home-entertainment system, not a console right? You’re saying that the PS3 is beyond games. You even say, “Our battlefield is different.” Good. You make sense, sort of, until you said this:
Because we have Blu-Ray, users can enjoy high definition video games
What!?! What in the? I thought, buh, buh… Oh my brain! It hurts…
What are you competing against really? HD-DVD players, or other next gen consoles? Can’t you just stomp your foot down and boldly announce that we’re competing against BOTH of them? Why the sudden sheepishness after months of bravado?
Wait. We know why.
