Sony: PS3 launch rumors “pure speculation”

SonyA few days ago, the semi-official Sony blog Three Speech, a blog whose legitimacy has been questioned over the few months or so it has been operating, released some alleged “leaked” details about PS3 firmware updates and some details on the European launch planned for 2007. Three Speech claimed that  the PS3 will be launched in Europe on the third day of the third month (that’s March 3) after a supposed interview with Sony’s Phil Harrison.

However Sony has come out to disperse the rumors today with a response, perhaps calling the legitimacy of Three Speech into question once again by dismissing these claims in the statement marking it as “pure speculation”. Sony’s spokesperson has also debunked rumors that the European PS3 launch would come at the same time as the HDip Camera and Sing Star attachments would be released: “We have not announced a date for Sing Star PS3 or the camera.” If you are thinking about the firmware update, then Sony’s response would simply be, “What firmware update?

Rumors that the UK version of the PS3 will include a firmware update with multi-tasking, new XMB display options and other details which were claimed by three speech have been set aside by Sony, not commenting in any useful way by simply saying “We haven’t confirmed what the UK model will ship with.” So to be perfectly honest, we aren’t any further into elaborating on the firmware update release schedule or the European PS3 release date than we were last week. Looks like we’ll have to wait for an official announcement this time.
