Sony: PS3’s time is melting away…and it’s fine

After the various tirades suffered by the not-yet-launched PS3 over the past months, Sony has been pulling all resources to get its next-gen console’s groove back. A PS3 demo here, a press release there; a video clip here, an interview there. Accordingly, for its latest approach, Sony is showing off a melting clock.

“The Persistence of Memory” is a modern art painting by renowned Catalan-Spanish artist Salvador Dali. He became one of the most important painters of the 20th century, and was mostly associated with the surrealist movement. His painting, which is sometimes referred to as Soft Clocks or Melting Clocks, was completed in 1931 and has been on display the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1934.

The white room image on the right is found at an PS3 anonymous site. The site contains no links whatsoever. It is just a white room so to speak, with a melting clock hanging on the wall. This could be part of Sony’s viral marketing or the use of anonymous sites, blogs and other mediums to promote a product.

Interestingly, various media including TV series The Simpsons and comic book the X-men had alluded to “Persistence of Memory.” The melancholic artwork also made an appearance as a villain in the popular SNES RPG EarthBound.
