Sony quarterly financials: PS3 up; PS2, PSP down
Sony has gone up to the platform and revealed their quarterly financials. To no surprise at all, the PS3 did so much better than the previous year, largely thanks to the cheaper slim model. Unfortunately, Sony can’t be happy for the other side of production. While the PS2 is understandably taking a dip, the PSP is also experiencing some lows on the sales end.

In Q3 2009, that’s from October-December 2009, the PS3 sold 6.5 million PS3s worldwide. During the same period last year, it was 4.5 million, so that’s a two million unit bump in PS3 sales. For the PS2, the number is at 2.1 million in Q3 2009 – that’s not really that bad since it was at 2.5 million last year.Sony’s sad story goes to the PSP, which went from 5.1 million in 2008 to 4.2 million in 2009.
Overall, the Sony reported its first profitable quarter in a year, though the games division remains stagnant. Sony reports that “despite a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, as well as PSP hardware unit sales, profitability was relatively unchanged mainly due to an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware”.
