Sony responds to 80GB PlayStation 3 speculation

Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) - Image 1Sony does not appear to deny a recent report of a US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) document which implied at a possible 80GB PlayStation 3 (aka PS3 Elite) in the works. But while this confirms the existence of such a document, Sony also appears to be downplaying the new model. As stated in its reply to Next Generation’s inquiry into the matter:

As mentioned when we made the product announcement for PS3, the system will have different configurations (thus, 60GB HDD with memory card slots and Wi-Fi and 20GB HDD without memory card slots or Wi-Fi both exist).

Application to the FCC has been made with various possibilities in mind, however, it does not lead to a new product announcement at this time.

This in turn means that for the moment, PS3 model CECHE01 (the 80GB version) is still just another concept, at least until further confirmation is sighted. And while this reply via Sony’s PR machine is a bit on the obscure, at least it wasn’t outright denial, which was often the case in the past.

As a backgrounder, the FCC in question was filed back in March 2, 2007. Aside from the rumored 80GB model, the document also made mention of a probable addition of a Bluetooth module in this new PS3 console.
