It looks like things are really looking up for Sony these days as the Japanese electronics giant posted an increased sales and cut its operating loss in the company’s first fiscal quarter results ending June 30.

According to it’s financial statement released today, Sony recorded a net profit of US$ 289 million for the first quarter, with sales up 3.8 percent equating to US$ 18.7 billion that further slimmed down its operating loss from US$ 422.1 million a year earlier to $43 million, thanks mainly to the low-cost PS3 Slim.

The PS3 unit sales more than doubled this year, moving 2.4 million units in the quarter as compared to 1.1 million units the previous year with it’s software sale reaching 24.8 million units (up against last year’s 10 million units).

On the PSP side, things are looking a bit differently as the handheld sale continue to decline from 1.3 million units last year to 1.2 million units this quarter, but interestingly however, software sales for the handheld jumped up to 9.2 million this quarter, as compared to 8.3 million last year. The PlayStation 2 hardware remained the same as last year with 1.6 million units but it’s software dropped significantly, from 8.5 million units to 3.4 million.
