Sony UK Insists No Finalized PS3 Launch Plans Until September

Sony still remains tight-lipped about exactly what they have in mind when they finally unleash the PS3.

In response to a UK retailers’ meeting regarding possible launch scenarios for the PS3, Sony UK announced that their formal plans for the console’s debut in Her Britannic Majesty’s realm won’t be confirmed until September.

Official PS3 UK distributor CentreSoft called a meeting of independent game retailers to discuss their views on a range of scenarios for the PS3’s launch. These scenarios include a controversial GBP150 deposit/pre-order scheme Sony is considering, talk of which had been circulating among game retailers and the press. Much of the discussions there centered on ensuring one-day stock for all vendors concerned, and “ensure parity and fairness of allocation across the board.”

CAVEAT EMPTOR, or BUYER BEWARE for anyone who doesn’t read dead languages: We would like to emphasize that when we say “Sony is considering” we mean that they have not announced any firm commitment to implement the pre-order scheme. The report we’ve read regarding that issue is firm on the point.

Acknowledging the meeting, a Sony UK rep confirmed that it was an independent initiative by CentreSoft, and insisted that they won’t be releasing any launch plans for now. Not until sometime next month, anyway. “We and Centresoft are trying to work as closely with our trade partners as we can to ensure a smooth launch. We have not announced our launch plans and probably won’t be doing so until mid-September.”
