Sony: Wireless pad batteries will last for “many years”

PS3 Controller

With the recent negative press on Sony due to it’s laptop battery crisis, it appears that it may have taken a new step in providing batteries for it’s latest range of products. Last week we posted some new information on the Sixaxis controller’s Lithium Polymer battery, and it seems that some of our readers were not happy about. Reports from around the internet suggested that the PS3 controller’s battery would not last very long and that gamers would have to go and buy another controller. However, a Sony representative has come to the rescue of the PS3 once again, claiming that the PS3’s wireless pad batteries will last for ‘many years’.

A Sony spokesperson said, “This is a purely speculative story and is largely untrue. The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it’ll be many years before there’s any degradation in terms of battery performance.” This sounds good enough on it’s own, but it appears that Sony are so confident in the new range of Lithium Polymer batteries will keep on truckin’ through all the strain of next generation games that they provided a guarantee. The spokesperson went on to say “When and if this happens, then of course we will be providing a service to exchange these items”.

Remember, you’ll also be able to charge up your controller using a supplied USB cable, and with this guarantee the PS3 shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg.
