Sony’s Licensing of Unreal Engine = Better SOE MMOs?

SOEWe have been covering the development which involves Sony and its move to license Unreal Engine 3. This could only mean that Sony Online Entertainment’s new MMO projects would be making use of Epic GamesUnreal Engine 3. Aside from that, future expansion of well-known SOE MMORPGs such as EverQuest, EverQuest 2, PlanetSide, and Star Wars Galaxies would also experience major benefits with this development.

In case you are in the dark about this, the Unreal engine is one of the most popular game engines for action games and it was first illustrated in the 1998 first-person shooter game Unreal. Ever since then, it has been the basis of many such games. It is developed by Epic Games. The Unreal Engine 3.0 incorporates support for Direct3D 9 and next generation APIs including XNA, Direct3D 10 and same level of OpenGL 2.x.

SOE is already planning on putting this into good use – the DC Comics-based game currently under development at SOE-Austin. This could only mean better things for SOE who has been receiving critical blows from gamers such as server lags and the fact that their MMOs have been overshadowed by the more popular World of Warcraft. Let’s hope that for the sake of SOE MMORPG gamers, the Unreal Engine 3.0 is the panacea to all their woes. We’ll see about that.
