Sony’s Q3 Fincancial report: PS3, PSP, UMD sales
Sony released today its 3rd quarter financial report which covers the period from October to December 2006, and while a lot of the report contains numbers which for most people appear to be quite useless, the report also gives a taste of how Sony are faring in terms of both hardware and software sales. Sony profits were up thanks to their new Bravia TV and Cybershot camera ranges, but unfortunately, the gaming division of the company has revealed a loss of 54.2 billion Yen.
In the report Sony, finally admitted that it has fallen short of its shipment targets for the PS3, with 1.84 million units being delivered across the world, barely reaching the promised 2 million units (with 1.03 million of those shipping to North America alone). Despite these shortcomings and bad predictions by analysts, Sony’s holding strong to the promise of 6 million PS3 units shipping by March 2007.
As for the PSP, hardware sales for the PS3’s portable brother are down 72% from 2005, with 1.76 million units sold compared to 2005’s 6.22 million units – which can be expected as the console gets older. However, it’s not all bad for Sony as PSP software sales are on the up! The PSP saw an increase of 24% over the previous year, surpassing sales targets and getting past the magic 20 million with a total of 21.2 million game titles sold.
What’s that? An increase in software sales when even more PSPs can play homebrew? Someone should tell Sony that homebrew is taking away their trade! With more homebrew-enabled PSPs on the way with firmware 3.10 being decrypted on day 0, it looks like the gaming giant will have to put up with lots more in the coming days.
