Spider-Man 3 and PlayStation 3 design similarities

We don’t know if you’ve noticed this before but the font being used by the PlayStation 3 (PS3) is the same as the official font of Spider-Man. Sony‘s console designer Teiyu Goto explained in the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) that there’s a very excellent reason and a rather nice story behind this.

Goto shared that they considered employing the PlayStation 2 (PS2) logo with the new console but then ultimately decided against it. The designer remarked, “Take the PS2 logo. We created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3.”

In terms of design, needless to say, the PS2 is very much different from the PS3. The first one is rather sharp at the edges but the PS3 is more refined, more sleek. The same was observed by Goto and then figured that the style used for Spider-Man is a very fitting choice,

If you really look at the PlayStation 3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the right.

Lastly, Teiyu Goto revealed that even President Kutaragi insisted on using the above-mentioned font. Goto mentioned that even before the design of the console came to be, Ken Kutaragi has already been toying with the idea,

It was also the wish of President Ken Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PlayStation 3.
