Splash Damage talks about in-game ads in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Neil Postlewaithe, Managing Director of Splash Damage and one of the producers behind Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, spoke about the in-game advertising players will see in the beta in an effort to clear things up with the community. It’s to note that gamers have felt rather iffy about in-game advertising rather than anything else, but it shouldn’t be the case here, as Neil explains:

For the last four years, we’ve put all of our effort into making Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. So, we’re not planning to ship this game and walk away. We want to keep supporting ETQW in as many ways as possible. We’ll be maintaining the persistent stats servers and the community site, and continuing to support ETQW with updates and improvements.

To help cover this level of on-going support without passing the costs on to the gamer, ETQW will feature appropriate advertisements in select locations of our levels. The ads aren’t intrusive and you won’t have to interact with them; they’ll just be part of the normal environment. In fact, there are some places it’s quite odd not to have an advertisement – the sides of container trucks, for example. Great care is being taken to ensure that all our ads are appropriate for the game world and we have absolute approval rights in this area.

Neil also reassures gamers that the company providing the ad system will never track or store personal information that might be used to identify players, and that the ad system only tracks how long players look at the advertisements themselves.

Well, that’s certainly comforting, with Splash Damage taking great care where to place the ads so they don’t look THAT out-of-place. Plus, with the trade-off of continuous support for the game itself, it certainly doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to see that the pros outweigh the cons. So what if that overturned container has Coca-Cola’s flaking logo painted onto it? Hello, future downloadable content!
