For fans of the almost-legendary Japanese RPG-machine, Square Enix, listen up as there may be yet another reason to get giddy with excitement, and yes, it may have something to do with the latest Final Fantasy sequel.

In a recent press release, Square Enix has just announced that it has just licensed Epic Games’ popular middleware, Unreal Engine 3, which it plans to use in the development of next-gen games. According to Taku Murata, head of Squeenix’s Research and Development Division, having this game engine on board can help the company’s game-making process in many ways:

The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development. However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform.

Now, we all know that Final Fantasy XIII is already in the works and is set to be released on the PS3. With UE3 now a factor, one can’t help but just imagine what kinds of environments and AI we’ll eventually encounter. Also, considering the fact that we’re talking about a team which has been able to eke out every bit of potential from the PS2, we have high hopes for what they can possibly concoct from both UE3 and the Cell processor.
