Square Enix’s wordwide lifetime sales for top franchises revealed

FF7 Cloud StrifeWhen you’re talking about Square Enix in a global scale, there’s no doubting that they’ve managed to rake in huge amounts of sales for all their franchises. Final Fantasy? Kingdom Hearts? And of course, the more recently acquired Tomb Raider? How do they all stack up against each other? It’s not surprising that they’re raking sales by the millions for these big franchises. I’m just left wondering… how do they fare against lifetime sales for MGS, GTA, CoD, and the like?

When you’re talking about Square Enix in a global scale, there’s no doubting that they’ve managed to rake in huge amounts of sales for all their franchises. Final Fantasy? Kingdom Hearts? And of course, the more recently acquired Tomb Raider? How do they all stack up against each other?

The video game giant has revealed figures of their lifetime sales for each of their franchises. Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy is right on top with a staggering lead. Their report also includes some big franchises they’ve acquired from Eidos Interactive, namely Tomb Raider and Hitman.

Here’s the top five in order of copies sold:

  • Final Fantasy: 85 million
  • Dragon Quest: 47 million
  • Tomb Raider: 30 million
  • Kingdom Hearts: 12 million
  • Hitman: 8 million

From various releases and remakes of the same game (across different platforms and across console generations, even), to handheld spinoffs and downloadable titles for the iPhone, it’s not a surprise that Square Enix is one to milk their franchises with so many iterations. Hence the numbers by the millions.

Seeing this list makes me wonder… how many copies has the Metal Gear franchise sold in its lifetime? What about the Grand Theft Auto series? And Call of Duty?
