Starcraft II Update: The Phoenix unit
For those who have been waiting for the last ten years for Blizzard to release Starcraft II, every little bit of information is like gold. Whatever race you’re planning on playing, it is imperative that you know each and every unit that you and your opponents will be fielding against each other.
The Protoss Phoenix, built from the Stargate, is armed with Twin Ion Cannons and is considered an air-superiority fighter. This unit is said to be a good replacement for the scouts and corsairs in establishing aerial supremacy in the game. One problem that Protoss units constantly face (whether on land or air) is the fact that opposing forces have cheaper units. This means that battles often give the opposition a 2 to 1 advantage or more in terms of numbers. This unit rectifies that situation.
The Protoss Phoenix accomplishes this by overloading its warp field through the use of its Ion Cannons. The end result is an area-of-effect blast which pretty much demolishes anything. However, using this ability leaves the Phoenix temporarily powerless and crippled, easy prey for any unit that escapes the initial attack.
This is a unit that I think works well when you have two groups covering each other. One group will overload while the second unit guards it from attacks. I assume that a slow moving wall such as this can clear opponents forces pretty quickly when coupled with some ground support. Be sure to keep checking back here for more updates on Starcraft II.
