Stream your music from iTunes to your PSP (2.60)
If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy your iTunes library on your PSP but have been stymied by the PSP’s lack of storage space – and are opposed to modifying your PSP too much – here’s a simple, quick solution for you that makes use of the PSP’s built-in Wi-Fi connection.
For this you’ll need a v2.60 PSP and a PC or laptop running XP and connected to a Wi-Fi router, which has iTunes v6.0.4 and has its songs placed in at least one playlist.
First set up your PC or laptop:
1. Download iTunes-PSP-server to the desktop of your PC or laptop.
2. Open port 8080 or disable all your firewalls.
3. Launch iTunes and then run the program you just downloaded.
4. In your browser open the page “http://localhost:8080?
You’ll know you’ve done it correctly if your browser takes you to an “iTunes RSS Server” page (if it doesn’t appear, double-check to see that port 8080 really is open and that all your firewalls really are disabled).
Next set up your PSP:
1. Get your PC/laptop’s IP address (go to ‘Start’ and then ‘Run’, then type ‘CMD’ then hit the Enter key and type ‘ipconfig’ in the window).
2. On your PSP, head over to ‘Network’ and then ‘Internet Browser’ and fill in “http://IPAddress:8080? in the address area.
3. If you’ve done this step correctly, iTunes RSS Server will appear; bookmark this page.
4. Click on any of the orange RSS icons you see to “add this channel” to your list.
5. Quit the browser and head to ‘Network’ and then ‘RSS Channel’, which will bring you to the very playlist/s of the iTunes of your PC or laptop.
When all that’s done all you need do is select a playlist and a song to listen to.
To be able to access your music from any hotspot (because these directions are only for streaming music through local Wi-Fi networks) just allow your local IP to be accessible externally by forwarding port 8080 in your router.
Also, when you update the contents of your iTunes library and the server’s already in operation you’ll have to select ‘Reload Library’ on the webpage in the PSP’s browser to be able to listen to the new stuff. (To avoid this step, just update your library before you start the server.)
Lastly, only copyright-protected MP3 and AAC files can be streamed (not sure why, but that’s how it is).
Give it a whirl and tell everyone how you find it!
Thanks to Snowbhord for the heads up…
