Format wars - Image 1It’s no secret that Sony‘s PlayStation 3 is currently enjoying a certain level of success thanks to the release of its new budget 40GB unit, so how is Sony doing so far? CEO Howard Stringer said that the PS3 is now selling three times as fast, and that’s a good thing. However, Stringer doesn’t only have words about Sony’s next-gen console, but also shared a few comments about Microsoft and Blu-ray’s rival format, HD-DVD.

Stringer said that if by any chance Blu-ray lost to HD-DVD in the format wars, Sony will resort to changing the PlayStation 3’s hard drive. He didn’t specify more details, but he did mention that losing the format war – if ever – will not hurt Sony too much.

Surprisingly, the Sony CEO expressed his intent to integrate Blu-ray and HD-DVD were he to be given a chance. “I wish I could go back in time, because I heard it was all about saving face,” Stringer said, referring to the chance for BD and HD-DVD to merge before he was given the CEO position.

He also shared his thoughts as to why Microsoft chose to support HD-DVD. Stringer reasoned that it may be because HD-DVD doesn’t have a stringent anti-piracy protection compared to Blu-ray, adding that strong anti-piracy precautions may not work to Microsoft’s advantage.
