Students test Wii “boxercise” against traditional workout

That’s what some curious Canadian students at the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia did as they pit the health benefits gained from Wii Boxing against  walking.

Which provides a better workout, thirty minutes worth of Nintendo’s Wii Boxing or a literal walk in the park? That’s what Justin White and twenty-seven of his fellow Dalhousie University students wanted to find out as they sought to measure the health benefits of both forms of exercise.

White and his peers participated in a comparison-and-contrast study consisting of thirty minutes of “boxercise” versus thirty minutes of walking in Halifax’s Point Pleasant Park in Nova Scotia. The researchers fellow students measured participants’ heart rates and perceived levels of exertion throughout the activities.

The average results confirmed what English scientists had previously discovered: playing Nintendo‘s Wii Boxing does not provide a sufficient physical workout as opposed to more traditional forms of exercise such as walking. On the other hand, White and his colleagues admitted that it does provide some weight management benefits, and it’s also a good way for sedentary folks to get started down the road to real life exercise and sports.
