Study says PS3 to lead console wars

X360, PS3 and WiiThe PlayStation 3 may not have had the best start in 2006 in terms of its launch, with the next generation console from Sony taking the number three spot in terms of sales in the North American territory. The Wii and Xbox 360 have also been reported to have sold more units between November and December than the PS3.

According to a Dublin-based market research firm though, the PS3 may have lost the Christmas 2006 battle, but the war is just beginning. The console war, that is.

The research firm says in its report titled, “The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming”, Sony will have 75 million PS3 consoles installed in homes around the world by the year 2010, fending off competition from Nintendo and Microsoft. Don’t expect the Wii and 360 to do badly in the so-called “console wars” though, as the analysts predict that due to PAL (that’s European to me and you) launch issues with the PS3 console it won’t thrash the competition like the PS2 did in the last generation.

The Xbox 360’s one year headstart has also given Microsoft a chance to run away with sales figures as its console drops in price and as its game range increases too. Of course, Market research involves a lot of speculation so do not take these predictions as fact. We’ll only know that for sure in 2010.
