Suda 51: on his quirky style of making games, multiplayer possibilities

In an interview conducted by Eurogamer, Goichi Suda talks about his past game titles (Killer 7, No More Heroes) and what inspires him to create them using his unconventional style.

Screenshot of Grasshopper Manufacture's No More Heroes for Wii - Image 1In an interview conducted by Eurogamer, Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi Suda, who is perhaps more known as Suda 51, talks about some of his past works (Killer 7, No More Heroes) and what inspired him to make such unconventional titles on the normally wholesome Nintendo Wii console.

Suda 51 mentions that his offbeat personality led him to create different things for the games he’s made. Taking elements off different media such as anime, games, movies, and TV drama, he puts all of this together when looking for inspiration when making games.

Suda 51 admitted, however, that he did not expect the more wholesome crowd of Wii gamers to be put off by the violent nature of his games. He naturally wanted to target the adult audiences for his games; something which he didn’t put into consideration after realizing the family-oriented nature of the console.

Still, the novelty of his quirky style of making games was not wasted on him. For one thing, he enjoyed including retro elements in No More Heroes as a tribute to the old-school generation of gamers and the era of the Atari 2600. He also mentions that using the Wiimote‘s motion sensing controls for the unique beam katana weapon used in the game was a natural choice for him.

When asked whether the option for a multiplayer mode for No More Heroes exists, this is what he had to say:

To be honest, I’m not really into multiplayer modes. I might do something like that in the future, maybe… I’m not saying that I don’t like it, it’s just that it’s not a priority for me to add that kind of thing into my games.
