Super Smash Bros. Brawl character update: meet the Pokemon Trainer

In the red corner… Wearing a red cap and shirt, weighing in at three pokeballs, here’s the Pokemon Trainer!

Yup. The nameless Pokemon Trainer (though he has an eerie resemblance to Ash Ketchum, doesn’t he?) is included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl‘s roster of fighters. We’ve never seen him before – at least not in titles outside the Pokemon franchise – so we’ll give you a sneak peek at the things you’ll be able to do as the Pokemon Trainer.

First off, you need to remember the fact that pokemon trainers don’t fight per se but they instead use their pokemon to fight for them. That’s the way the Pokemon Trainer fights in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well. In his arsenal are three types of pokemon of three degrees of evolution: Squirtle, Ivysaur (first evolution of Bulbasaur), and Charizard (second evolution of Charmander). Since the Pokemon Trainer has three pokemon, he can freely switch between each of them using his Down Special move: Pokemon Change.

The change is automatic in effect, as the returning pokemon tags the next pokemon out into battle. They have a set order from weakest to the strongest or smallest to the largest (whatever floats your boat). The three pokemon share a damage meter but they have separate “stamina” meters so you’d be in trouble if you use the same pokemon too long or switch them around too often. You’d have to think of a strategy to use all three to your brawling advantage.

Got all of that? Feel free to check out the Super Smash Bros. Brawl screenshots for visual assistance (remember to click the Full article link for the rest of them). Nintendo’s upcoming brawler for the Wii will be hitting the shelves in December 3, so better start marking your calendars.

Oodles of thanks go to RomTheStampede for the tip!
