Super Smash Bros. Brawl Details

Oh wow. This was a bombshell all right. After completely killing my hopes yesterday by not announcing a word about Super Smash Bros., they’ve made this the best day of the month for me (even better than my birthday!). I will break down the details for you right here, right now.

First, I’ll get the bad news out of the way. Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be released on the launch day of the Wii as previously hoped, it will be launching in 2007. Now, we go on to the good news. The game will features a lot of new playable characters as we previously mentioned. So far, Meta Knight (I’ve been waiting for him <3), Pit (Kid Icarus fans rejoice), Wario (no-brainer), Zero Suit Samus (surprising…), and Solid Snake (O_o o_O) have been announced. Yes. Solid Snake will be making an appearance and he had a lot of the spotlight in the trailer.

Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and Smash Bros. as well as the director for the game, says that Hideo Kojima begged for Solid Snake to be in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but it just wasn’t possible due to time constraints. However, Snake is making an appearance in this newest installment. When asked about other third party characters, Shigeru Miyamoto said, “There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters.” So don’t count Sonic out just yet.

“We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn’t want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game.”

Also, it looks like Wario will have a fart attack. Maybe playing on the  “Wii” theme? Also, during the trailer it looked like there will be items that will unleash special attacks specific to characters. Link unleashes a barrage of attacks utilizing the Triforce while Mario goes all hadouken with his fireballs.

The game WILL utilize the Nintendo WiFi Connection. Also, much to the relief of long-time smashers, the game will use either the GCN controller or the shell. Sakurai explains, “We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We’re looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been. The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I’ll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet.” This is definitely great news for those who like Super Smash Bros. for its competitive side, which the WiiMote would not be fit for.

Sorry if there were little updates in the last hour. I was tracking down every little bit of information I could on this game. I love this series and am typing pretty excitedly here. More surprises await so stay tuned.
