Supreme Commander: supremely moddable

Okay, now we're going to replace that gun with a weenie launcher... - Image 1Chris Taylor, evangelical leader of the Temple of RTS Like We’ve Never Seen Before (really, who has seen a Total Annihilation since TA? Not until Supreme Commander, that is), has been explaining to many ears how his latest love child, as reader shyguy (Unregistered) put it, is supersized for the fight. Big guns. Big lands. Big rigs for beautiful screens. Takes big balls to play the game and come out alive, six-to-twelve hours later.

Guess what: Gas Powered Games wants to put it all in your hands. Supremely moddable. As much access as a backstage pass to a Metallica concert. Chris tells RTSCommunity.com, when they asked how moddable SuppyCom would be, on a scale of one to ten:

I would really hope that we are in the high end of that scale, at least an 8 but hopefully a 9. We know there is something we overlooked that was hardcoded in the game, but that doesn’t mean we can’t release an update to correct that. SupCom was not only architected to support modding, but we build something we call the “mod manager” right into it… and though there will be wrinkles to iron out, we are very excited about this approach.

Built for Mod from the start, a “mod manager” to hold your hand, and all of that thousand-kilometer scale, moddable? And from the creator of Total Annihilation, an RTS that still manages to hold its own, critically speaking? That’s it. Where’s the pre-order page…
