Survey: Will you buy a second console?

Even with a huge differential in sales numbers, a survey done by analyst firm Frank N. Magid Associates provided some interesting results. 1,864 console owners were asked on an online survey, most being 18-64 years old.

They were asked two questions. The first: “What impact, if any, does owning the Xbox 360/Wii have on your likelihood to acquire a Wii/Xbox 360?”

The numbers are pretty close: Among Wii owners, 53% are neutral or likely to buy a PlayStation 3, while 44% are neutral or leaning towards buying Xbox 360. For Xbox 360 owners, 52% are neutral or likely to buy a PlayStation 3, and 66% are either neutral or want a Wii.

Magid didn’t give any results from the Playstation 3 owners side, probably because there weren’t enough people to answer and reach sample size. On both occasions, more than half are likely to buy a PS3. Maybe, they’re waiting for killer games to come out?

The next question: “How likely is it that you or anyone in your household will purchase one of the following game console systems within the next 12 months?”

• Likely to get one – 6%
• 50/50 chance of getting one – 16%
• Do not want – 49%

PlayStation 3

• Already own one – 4%
• Will definitely get one – 5%
• Likely to get one – 5%
• 50/50 chance of getting one – 13%
• Do not want – 54%

Xbox 360 takes the lead with 18% of respondents either already own one, or interested in getting the console within a year. Wii comes close second with 17%, while PS3 is at 14%.

It might be worth noting that the survey was done online. Given the target audience of Wii, which is the casual gamer, it may be possible that a huge portion of Wii owners wouldn’t bother signing up for an online survey.

Good ‘ol PlayStation 2 joined the fray, and garnered competent results. 39% are already owners, 3% are still definitely gonna buy one within the year, 1% probably would, while 4% are undecided. Only 43% (the lowest among all the consoles in the survey) won’t buy it.
