Takashi Iizuka talks more about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
SEGA Studio USA producer Takashi Iizuka recently sat down with IGN for an interview about the upcoming title for the Nintendo Wii, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. As always, we’re here to give you the skinny on what’s to expect of the Sega Saturn title’s revival for Nintendo Company Ltd.’s console.
Starting off the interview, Takashi Iizuka quickly dispelled the rumors of the sequel being originally intended for the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360. He explained that it was customary for SEGA’s studios to evaluate every platform available before any game development actually took place, and it was the same with NiGHTS.
The decision to make the video game for the Nintendo Wii was made with not only the console’s unique controller, but also its target demographic – meaning that Takashi wanted the game’s heartwarming story to be appreciated by players who could very well do just that.
He then explained how long the game has been on development, recounting that the creative process actually began as early as 2006 – and how each and every internal department of SEGA worked in a collaborative effort in the game’s overall production.
When asked about how the Wii controller will come into play to control the graceful flight mechanics of NiGHTS, Iizuka replied that the Wiimote will in fact also be used in tandem with the Nunchuck attachment, in addition to be able to direct NiGHTS’ flying movements with the Wiimote itself. This was to give the players an option to control NiGHTS with either the Wiimote acting as a “wand” of sorts, or with a more traditional setup, making it accessible to both the Sega Saturn generation and newbies to the series alike.
For those of you wondering about the game’s online capabilities, Takashi reported that currently, any online joy for NiGHTS is still pretty much up in the air – but worry not, as they’re keenly investigating on how to expand the NiGHTS experience to a more global scale.
And if you’ve been fretting about the game’s graphics – I can’t blame you, recent news IS cause for alarm – you’d be happy to know that Takashi Iizuka and his team are proud of what they’ve achieved, stating that they’ve worked hard on their new 3D engine to push the envelope and make the NiGHTS world truly alive. That’s an overwhelming relief!
