TDK mass producing Blu-ray Disc media
EE Times reports that TDK has just begun shipping 25GB recordable and rewritable Blu-ray Disc media nationwide. TDK is the first company to start selling bare Blu-Ray based media.
Retail pricing is set at $19.99 for a 25 GB BD-R (Recordable), $24.99 for a 25 GB BD-RW (Rewritable).
Additionally, TDK will ship 50 GB Blu-ray Disc media later this year. They will be priced at $47.99 for a 50GB BD-R (Recordable) and $59.99 for a 50G B BD-RW (Rewritable).
TDK is manufacturing the Blu-ray Discs at its Chikumagawa Techno Factory in Japan. The company uses a high-sensitivity, copper silicon material recording material for long-lasting performance.
Unfortunately, equipment to play the Blu-ray Discs remains scarce. It’s still waiting for its killer application, i.e. the PS3. It will be interesting to see the response to Blu-Ray once the PS3 is released. Samsung has delayed U.S. introduction of Blu-ray Disc players until late June.
