Tecmo Bowl was THE football game in the early days of gaming. It was fun, fast and deep for a game during its glory days. Things turned south, however, as the franchise took some hard knocks in the 32-bit age. the clever features were still there, but faced with powerhouse titles like Madden NFL in the PlayStation gridiron, it was blown off the field.

Now Tecmo announces its return to the field with Tecmo Bowl 2008. This trailer features a satirical approach to the franchise’s history, and it’s always great to see developers make fun of themselves, but we hope when game time comes, we can laugh with the game, not laugh at it.

Tecmo Bowl 2008 has been announced so far for the Wii’s Virtual Console. Right now we can’t tell if the title can tap into the clever controls of the Wii, but we certainly hope it does so we can revisit the lighter side of football with this patriarch franchise.
