Tekken 6 “not so high definition”?

Tekken 6 looks awesome enough in the assets Namco Bandai has released so far, but for HD connoisseurs, there’s still the burning question of whether or not the game’s console versions really are high def. Pixel counters from Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry are saying that it’s not quite there yet.

Here’s a quick quote from Pixel Foundry’s findings:

Analysis of Xbox 360 screens released to date reveals native resolutions of anything from 1280×720, to 1360×768 to full-on 1080p. On the other hand, PS3 assets released so far reveal a disappointing 1024×576 resolution – over 33 per cent of the 720p detail gone, just like that.

The disparity between the available Xbox 360 shots was enough for Digital Foundry to suspect that something was clearly amiss, and based on the preview code we have available, direct HDMI dumps reveal a 1024×576 framebuffer on default settings. All of which sounds like another cross-format catastrophe, but the reality is somewhat more intriguing and, at the same time, rather bizarre.

I’m no master of the intricacies of high definition video, so a lot of the technobabble in the report just plain went over my head. The “bizarre” part they talk about is rather interesting, though: with just one option tweak you can push the game’s Xbox 360 version up in excess of 1280×720, but it ends up less detailed.

It’s also worth noting that most of Pixel Foundry’s analysis were done with the Xbox 360 version. They also mention that Tekken 6 is an arcade game running on PlayStation 3 hardware, which could probably translate into higher performance on the Sony platform. Probably.
