TGS: Ratchet & Clank preview

r&cWith the Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters demo at the TGS, the game showed that perhaps its title should be changed to Ratchet and Clank: Framerate Matters, because the game’s super smooth framerate was one of the most striking features of the demo!

And at the stage of being just 15% complete? Really not bad at all. In fact, because of this, the game has been dubbed as one of the best-looking PSP games at this stage of development, along with Daxter on PSP of course.

New Stage, New Boss: A little later into the game is the new stage where you get to fight with a new purple monster boss. In this stage, Ratchet has a red-armored suit on and the boss has a few more weapons than in past sessions also. These weapons include a mini-turret, goo bomb, vertical shooting rocket, all in addition to the standard machine gun, shotgun, and atomic bomb.

Animation: Smooth lip movements of shrieking monsters and talking characters. Textures are simpler and has lower-resolution (as compared to Daxter); but it actually turned out quite nicely as IGN saw that the Hawaiian shirts on the bad bots looked sharp and clear. The animation on the purple boss is also done nicely, with the monster’s teeth-bearing and flapping lips while screaming at you.

If you look carefully, you’ll see that the PS2 gameplay is somehow brought onto the PSP. The levels are a bit corridor-based and the initial view of the game has been changed to give a wide view of what’s visible in your direction and what’s been loaded so far. However, if you pan the camera around, you’ll see structures out on the ocean and flying things in the air.

This game is the first project for neophyte developer High Impact Games, although the team does have members from the Ratchet and Clank creator Insomniac. Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters seems to be in good hands as the game looks fantastic and seems like it’s right on track for its release next year.
