TGS06 Tenchu Senran Demo Gameplay Details

TGS 2006

Okay, so we’ve reported that a demo will be available on the Xbox live marketplace. Fans of the series are already eager and waiting, some have downloaded the demo already. Thing is, the demo for From Software‘s Tenchu Senran is only out for Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace.

Well, the good folks at IGN were able to get their hands on a copy and here are the pertinent details when it comes to gameplay. According to them, the demo offers a daytime environment with a large open city. The controls work well, but in Tenchu fashion, it “works well” only if you’ve gotten the hang of it. The learning curve is pretty steep.

Once you get sufficiently adept with the controls, all those fancy moves and graceful stealth kills become possible.

Several old gameplay nuances return. For example, the stealth kill animation differs depending on your approach on the unsuspecting enemy. It rewards player patience and creativity at trying to get to the poor hapless guard. The grappling hook is still there, making quick escapes and proper positioning possible. Also featured in the demo is the character customization. There aren’t that many options, but they’re enough to dress up a Ninja Thug in drag. There should be more by the time the official release rolls in.

If their observations hold, then I think that other than the character customization part, Tenchu Senran so far looks a bit too similar to Tenchu: Fatal Shadows.

Hopefully, From Software will be able to clean up or minimize the long time issues (controls, camera, odd AI, and iffy stage design), and provide us with a Tenchu we can love not only for the ambiance and the crisp clean graphics but also for the gameplay.

They did mention that there’ll be a playable demo and a trailer for Tenchu Senran at the Microsoft Tokyo Game Show 2006 Booth, so we’ll keep you updated if the playable that’s there has anything new.
