The 10 Weapons Of Nintendo

WiiAccording to Chris Martin, an experienced game journalist, everyone of the “Big Three” soon to fight the next-generation war has it’s own weapons. The big selling points, the technology, or in some cases, the reputation. Microsoft, Martin says, has Halo 3and Xbox Live. Sony has lots of horsepower with the PS3 and, well, bad publicity. But what does Nintendo have to survive the two gaming Goliaths sharing the market with them?

Martin came up with a list of 10 reasons why Nintendo will prevail. As he wrote, the following are the 10 weapons of Nintendo:

10. The Wiimote, because “it is the spirit of Nintendo’s outlook for the future of the game industry”. Nintendo went at risk to invent a completely new controller device, and others followed. For Martin, “Everyone else, at this point, seems to be just catching up”.

9. Red Steel, because “with the Wiimote letting you aim your gun or fist or sword you’ll instantly notice that offers to gamers something that no game can yet offer: Immersion”. While Red Steel is probably only a hint of things to come in regard to Wiimote-uses, Martin sees the game as an important pioneering effort.

8. Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, as the game “is focusing on taking the interactivity of the Wiimote to a new level by interlacing the simple, addictive gameplay from previous WarioWares and the various ways that gamers can hold the Wiimote”. It will be the game that fully shows the flexibility the Wiimote allows for.

7. Wii Sports, since“hitting the ball will be more than just a button press. With the Wii’s wonderful ability to sense the speed and ferocity of a swing you can’t just whiff the controller like you don’t care either”. It’s one of the less-talked Wii games, but for the author, could turn out as a very good piece of software.

6. The Virtual Console service. Martin thinks it “has the potential to easily oust Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade as the foremost provider of classic video games”. While there is still very little known about the service, the expected sheer size of it should put XBLA’s game library to shame.

5. EA as a third party developer. The company doesn’t exactly have a good reputation with gamers and is known for countless rehashes. But it seems that they can do something great when they want to, as shown by the new Wii Madden game, which is supposed to take extensive use of the Wiimote.

4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl because it “has been on everybody’s To-Play list ever since so secretly announced at E3 06”. With the new characters, slight visual improvements and new ideas, the game will be once again the party hit no. 1 for a Nintendo Console.

3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. As Chris Martin said, “Utilizing the unique controls of the Wii system, Corruption is going to bring, much like Red Steel, a new feel to the first person shooter”. The closing part to the Metroid Prime trilogy will also be the first game on a new console, much like Halo 3. This fact encourages the developers to make an almost-perfect game.

2. Super Mario Galaxy. Martin felt it “was a blast to play at E3 and we want more”. Mario has always had a big adventure on a new Nintendo console, and Galaxy will be no different. With the new concept involving hopping between planets and asteroids, as well as the Wii controls, it should be the best Mario game for a long time.

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. While it’s a very personal choice for the author, he still thinks that “with Twillight Princess and Metroid out of the door the day of release, and Mario close behind, Nintendo is going to be a tough best to stop”.

While I largely agree with Chris Martin’s choices, I’m not too hyped for Twilight Princess. It might be more than just a beefed up Cube version, but I believe the console’s greatest potential lies in the casual titles like Wii Sports. What do you think?
