Last updated 9 hours backThe macOS Sonoma update 14.6 on Monday includes the promised clamshell-mode upgrade, which allows the 14″ MacBook Pro with an M3 processor to utilize two external displays. The 13-inch MacBook Air M3 processor was first to support dual displays when in clamshell. With Monday’s macOS upgrade, the feature is now retrofitted on the older 14-inch MacBook Pro M3. Apple promised that the feature would be added to the MacBook Pro M3 in November 2023, but it took almost nine months for them to deliver. Currently, the MacBook Pro M3 processor supports full native resolution for the built-in screen in conjunction with an external 6K display refreshing at 60Hz. In Clamshell mode the internal display can be deactivated and replaced by a 5K external display that refreshes at up to 60Hz. The MacBook Air with the M3 processor will not support dual Pro Display XDR, but only one. Dual 6K displays are not something that MacBook Air, MacBook Pro non-Max or Pro users would want given the cost difference between the two displays and the hardware hosting them. But you never know. All external monitors must be connected to Thunderbolt ports. We recommend a Thunderbolt Dock to do this, as it will provide power and a single cable to connect both monitors and all peripherals to your MacBook Air.
